Thurne

In and around the area

Located on the River Thurne, the pretty riverside village of Thurne is said to be derived from the Saxon word for thorn bush.  Dominated by the distinctive Thurne Windpump, which stands at the mouth of Thurne Dyke, it was built in 1920 and was locally known as Morse’s Mill, named after the late Bob Morse, who saved it from being scrapped.  It is occasionally open to the public.

Just across the water from the staithe the St Benet’s level Windpump can also be seen.

Thurne is also home to the sailing group Theta, a small non-profit sailing club which was been running for over 60 years.

The Weaver’s Way footpath runs through Thurne, and a lovely circular walk follows a section of this long distance footpath, starting from the staithe, following the river.  From the staithe is also a good location to watch the Three Rivers Race which takes place on the first weekend in June each year.
